The interview was made in 1994, in the Convent of the Sisters of the Divine Zeal of Monza (near Milan), where Sister Giovannina lives.<\/p>\n

Sister Giovannina has contributed a great deal, with love and with her innocent childlike spirit, in providing information and personal witnessing on the figure of Luisa, for the Cause of Beatification.<\/p>\n

She is one of the young girls (trainees) who used to go daily to Luisa’s home in order to learn how to work with the “Tombolo”…But her contact with Luisa produced in her (as in many others) infinitely greater spiritual fruits.<\/p>\n

FJ – Well. Sister Giovannina, we are happy for the opportunity you gave us to speak with you, as we\u2019ve done other times, about the personality of Luisa.\u00a0 Luisa is very important for both of us…<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, certainly!<\/p>\n

FJ – …and we can say that our vocations came from her inspiration…<\/p>\n

SG – …I really escaped from there…<\/p>\n

FJ –\u00a0 Yes, Suor Giovannina escaped from Luisa\u2019s home.\u00a0 So, it is true that she is important.\u00a0 We would like to start, this morning, talking about Luisa, and I would like you to tell us how you met Luisa.\u00a0 We know that it was around 1914 or 1915, when you were 7-8 years old and you used to go to her house.\u00a0 Tell us a little bit about it.\u00a0 How did it happen?<\/p>\n

SG – My mother wanted me to learn how to work with the \u201ctombolo\u201d.\u00a0 So she said:\u00a0 \u2018Well, I\u2019ll go and ask Luisa.\u2019\u00a0 She went and Luisa said: \u2018Yes, let her come.\u2019\u00a0 So I started.\u00a0 But I couldn\u2019t stay on Luisa\u2019s bed to learn the first \u201cpoints.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 So, Rosaria got a little nervous and scolded me.\u00a0 Luisa said to her: \u2018Why did you do that?\u2019\u00a0 And Rosaria: \u2018Because she doesn\u2019t pay attention!\u2019\u00a0 Luisa defended me:\u00a0 \u2018But she started only two days ago…\u00a0 How can you say that she is not attentive?\u00a0 It takes time.\u00a0 It took you fifteen days, so please don\u2019t scold her… And then, if her father comes and sees that she has cried, who knows what happens!\u2019\u00a0 So Rosaria remained quiet.\u00a0 Then,\u00a0 when Rosaria wasn\u2019t there, Luisa told me: \u2018Come here. Learn.\u2019\u00a0 And in three days I learned the \u201cmerletto.\u201d<\/p>\n

FJ – So, you learned in three days!… Luisa loved you very much, didn\u2019t she?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, very much!<\/p>\n

FJ – Didn\u2019t Luisa belong to your same Parish?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, Santa Maria Greca.<\/p>\n

FJ – …Where she is now buried.<\/p>\n

SG – Yes. Once she said: \u2018Why are you going away?\u2019\u00a0 And I: \u2018Luisa, I want to be a nun,…before I get old!\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 Luisa replied with: \u2018Oh, Jesus, Jesus!\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 Then, one day, when Father Palma thought it was the right moment… I had prepared some extra linens, for I couldn\u2019t show my Mama that I was ready to go…\u00a0 It was the day of the Most Holy Virgin Assumed into Heaven,…in March. I was at home and the grandmother…<\/p>\n

FJ – Who?…Your grandmother?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, my grandma who loved me so much.\u00a0 My mother asked me why I wasn\u2019t eating… I went to my room, took a few linens, and said that I was going to eat at Luisa\u2019s place.\u00a0 I said, \u2018Arrivederci!\u2019…and I closed the door.\u00a0 Around 9 o\u2019clock at night, my father was worried not seeing me back.\u00a0 So he went and knocked at Luisa\u2019s door.\u00a0 But Luisa didn\u2019t open.\u00a0 My father asked where I was, and Luisa answered: \u2018Your daughter went to become a nun!\u2019\u00a0 My father: \u2018And where about?\u2019\u00a0 And Luisa: \u2018She didn\u2019t tell me!\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – Hadn\u2019t you gone with Father Palma?<\/p>\n

SG – I had already spoken with the Founder…<\/p>\n

FJ – …Father Annibale?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes, yes…<\/p>\n

FJ – Can you remember when Father Annibale used to come to Luisa\u2019s home?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes, I remember.<\/p>\n

FJ – …and he celebrated Mass in Luisa\u2019s room…<\/p>\n

SG – …yes, They locked themselves in, to talk and write.\u00a0 He corrected the writings.\u00a0 If Luisa made some mistakes, he would correct them…<\/p>\n

FJ – Did he ever spend the night at Luisa\u2019s place?<\/p>\n

SG – No. One night it was raining and Luisa wanted him to remain.\u00a0 But he said he would rather go,…as soon as the rain would stop.<\/p>\n

FJ – What did Father Annibale say when you told him that you wanted to become a nun?<\/p>\n

SG – He turned to Luisa\u2019s crucifix and said: \u2018Oh Lord, she is still too young!\u2019\u00a0 But I replied: \u2018No, no. I am \u201cgrown up\u201d<\/p>\n

FJ – Sometimes Father Annibale would come to Luisa with other Priests – holy Priests!\u00a0 Do you remember Father Braccali, the Jesuit?\u00a0\u00a0 [Please note: I think that Father Gennaro Braccali is the Priest to whom Jesus speaks through Luisa about the Houses of Reunion of Priest (Vol 10), and also the Priest mentioned (\u201cFather G\u201d) in Volume 11, who offers himself to Jesus as victim, through Luisa].<\/em><\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes. He loved me very much.\u00a0 I would bring him coffee or water when he was talking with Luisa….<\/p>\n

FJ – …and did you meet Father Montemurro?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes, but he was…more serious.<\/p>\n

FJ – Who? Father Montemurro?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes.<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell me what happened when he celebrated Mass in Luisa\u2019s room.\u00a0 Tell us that story!<\/p>\n

SG – [She laughs, and then uses her hands to describe Luisa\u2019s room<\/em>]… Luisa\u2019s bed was here. Here the chair… and here, the altar.\u00a0 Rosaria was jealous and didn\u2019t want me to be there.\u00a0 But Luisa said: \u2018Shhh! Let her alone!\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – …and what happened that time when Father Braccali was celebrating Mass?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, he started to levitate…<\/p>\n

FJ – Did you see him?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, and I said to Luisa: \u2018Luisa, Father is going to fall!\u00a0 I\u2019m calling Angelina! … But Luisa made a sign… \u2018don\u2019t worry!\u2019…<\/p>\n

FJ – And then, what happened to Father Braccale?<\/p>\n

SG – He came down by himself.. and then he continued to say Mass.. \u2018Dominus Vobiscum..!\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – Didn\u2019t Father Annibale \u201cgive him the obedience\u201d to come down?<\/p>\n

SG – No, no. He remained suspended…like this…from the ground.\u00a0 I remember it well.\u00a0 But I cried, fearing that he might fall and leave us….. And Luisa said: \u2018Shhhh!\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – Were you scared?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes. Then, around 11 o\u2019clock – Mass was at 9:30 – Luisa told me: \u2018There\u2019s no need to be afraid. They are saints.\u00a0 They rise up a little bit, and then Jesus makes them come down again..!\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – So, after Mass Luisa prayed…<\/p>\n

SG – She prayed…. and she worked…<\/p>\n

FJ – …and she also suffered the Passion, true?…<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes. At the beginning she had stigmata, but then she said: \u2018Lord, I have to work…and not only this… I can\u2019t…I don\u2019t want to show this to people..\u2019\u00a0 So, Jesus made her content, and the following morning the visible wounds disappeared.<\/p>\n

FJ – Did you ever touch Luisa\u2019s hands?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes! Many times!<\/p>\n

FJ – …Were they sensitive?..<\/p>\n

SG – Oh yes!\u00a0 Once she said: \u2018Ahh Ahhh!\u2019\u00a0 And I: \u2018Luisa, I haven\u2019t done anything.\u00a0 I only kissed them!\u2019\u00a0 And Luisa: \u2018Yes, but do it a little more gently\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – What could you see through Luisa\u2019s hands?<\/p>\n

SG – They were illuminated!<\/p>\n

FJ – Could you also see the stigmata…the holes in the middle?<\/p>\n

SG – After a while the skin was fine, but one could still see the holes inside.<\/p>\n

FJ – But, how could Luisa work at the \u201ctombolo\u201d with such pain.\u00a0 Wasn\u2019t it hard to do that?<\/p>\n

SG – She would give the difficult parts to me.\u00a0 Sometimes, she called me and ask for my help. So I left my \u201ctombolo\u201d and took Luisa\u2019s \u201ctombolo.\u201d\u00a0 She continued my \u201cmerletto\u201d for a while, which was easier… and I did her work……<\/p>\n

FJ – Why did Luisa work?<\/p>\n

SG – She had lost her parents.\u00a0 There was Angelina, Rosaria, myself, and one other girl.\u00a0 Her name was Francesca, the sister of one of our nuns.\u00a0 It happened that her father was very ill, about to die.\u00a0 So one day, during Mass, Francesca came upstairs crying and said to Luisa: \u2018Luisa, my daddy is dying!\u00a0 Please tell Jesus that I want to die in his place!\u2019\u00a0 Luisa looked at the Crucifix, and then lowered her head….\u00a0 Within eight days, Francesca died……\u00a0 Oh! how much I cried! We were friends….. When my mother gave me some food, I always asked for two – for me and for her – \u2018cause they were very poor, and I didn\u2019t want her to have to watch me while I was eating.\u00a0\u00a0 And my mother put double portion, so we could eat together.<\/p>\n

FJ – Luisa had always her Crucifix in front of her and spoke with Him.\u00a0 Did you see this?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes.\u00a0 Once I saw His lips moving and I said to Luisa: \u2018Luisa, Jesus is crying and His mouth is open!\u2019\u00a0 Luisa didn\u2019t say anything….\u00a0 and He stopped after a while.<\/p>\n

FJ – …And what about the Baby Jesus in the glass bell, near Luisa\u2019s bed?<\/p>\n

SG – He moved as well!<\/p>\n

FJ – Didn\u2019t you think that these things were a little strange?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes. We could not hear but we could see the lips moving. Luisa would remain with the \u201cfuselli\u201d in her hands… and they talked…. Yes, they talked…\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Luisa trusted me very much.\u00a0 When she needed something, she called me and asked me: \u2018Please, do this and that…\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – She loved you very much…<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, she did…\u00a0\u00a0 My mother helped too…\u00a0 I said to her: \u2018Mamma, Luisa\u2019s bed sheets are dirty. I will bring them tonight, since you have to do laundry…And she said \u2018Yes, bring them\u2019…<\/p>\n

FJ – Every night Luisa lost her senses.\u00a0 What happened that night when you and Francesca entered her room?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, we entered the room and we touched and lifted Luisa\u2019s hands….Then we were worried for we didn\u2019t know what to tell her.\u00a0 Francesca said: \u2018Don\u2019t worry, Luisa is not going to say anything.\u2019\u00a0 But then Luisa: \u2018You,… don\u2019t take advantage of me, please.\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell us about your vocation.\u00a0 Did your parents agree?<\/p>\n

SG – Noooo. What did they not do!<\/p>\n

FJ – …when Father Palma brought you to Trani?…<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, he brought me to Trani… When my father came to pick me up, they had closed the doors,…and when he asked where I was, Angelina answered: \u2018She went to Trani…. but we don\u2019t know who she went with!\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – So, where did you actually go?<\/p>\n

SG – First to Trani. But when Angelina called saying that my father was looking for me, that same night, we left for Rome…. There I became a novice……I was still very little.<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell us about how Luisa ate.<\/p>\n

SG – She ate whatever they gave to her… sometimes, a little \u201csemolino\u201d…but only a couple of little spoons, otherwise she would start to bring up everything…<\/p>\n

FJ – Why did she vomit?<\/p>\n

SG – …Who knows…Maybe the Lord said: \u2018This is enough for you..\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – When you were there, what kind of prayers did you say?<\/p>\n

SG – The Rosary…Yes, all together… and the Hours of the Passion…\u2019My Sorrowful Mother, I see that You are now ready for the last Sacrifice….\u2019\u00a0 [Here Sister Giovannina begins to recite the 24th<\/sup> Hour by Heart!]\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>We always prayed this, with Luisa.\u00a0 I used to know it by heart, now I need the book to refresh it!<\/p>\n

FJ – How was the face and expression of Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – Always smiling. Even when she was persecuted…\u00a0 Father Annibale had brought the books of the Hours of the Passion, and someone informed the city\u2019s authorities…They came and took all the books away.<\/p>\n

FJ – Was Luisa saddened by this?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, she was!\u00a0 Then Father Annibale brought some more of them.<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell us about the Cimadomo sisters.\u00a0 They were the ones who donated the land on which the Convent was built.\u00a0 Did they often come to visit Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – Every day! Not the ones who are still alive.\u00a0 I mean the one who died. Their name were Giuseppina, Lina and…I can\u2019t remember the name of the other one. They were three sisters.<\/p>\n

FJ – What did they do with Luisa, did they pray?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes. Especially… \u2018O Sorrowful Mother, I see that You are now ready for the last Sacrifice…\u2019\u00a0 [Again, she begins the 24th<\/sup> Hour by heart!]<\/em><\/p>\n

FJ – How was Angelina, Luisa\u2019s sister?<\/p>\n

SG – Sometimes she was nervous, for she had to wash the floors and everything else…<\/p>\n

FJ – Did she protect Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, she did.<\/p>\n

FJ – And what about Rosaria?<\/p>\n

SG – Rosaria…Rosaria was a little…. She also had to work.<\/p>\n

FJ – What did they do with Luisa, did they serve her?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes<\/p>\n

FJ – What else can you remember about Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – All these things…for example during the Holy Week of the Passion she didn\u2019t touch food at all…..to the extent that, in seeing Luisa, neither I wanted to eat\u2026<\/p>\n

FJ – If Luisa wasn\u2019t eating,\u00a0 you didn\u2019t want to eat….<\/p>\n

SG – No, I didn\u2019t want.<\/p>\n

FJ – Can you remember when she died?<\/p>\n

SG – I wasn\u2019t there….\u00a0 …..Listen. I was at \u201cGiardini Messina\u201d…It was about 5 o\u2019clock in the morning and I got up to take one of the girls to the bathroom.\u00a0 As I went back to sleep Luisa appeared in front of me calling me … like this… And I cried: \u2018Luisa, did you die?\u00a0 No, please do not leave!\u2019\u00a0 Very loud, so much so, that the little girls heard me. They asked me if it was a dream. I said \u2018yes, yes, I was dreaming\u2019 but then I cried all day.\u00a0 The Mother Superior didn\u2019t let me go to Corato…You know, I had to suffer a little, because I wanted to see Luisa.\u00a0 But Luisa came to me.\u00a0 She caressed me and made me understand that she was praying for me.\u00a0 She was all in white….<\/p>\n

FJ – And then, you knew that she had died…<\/p>\n

SG – …Yes, they sent me a telegram… After Mass, the Mother noticed that I had cried during the whole Mass.\u00a0 Then, after I accompanied my forty little girls to the refectory, she called me and ask me why I was crying.\u00a0 I said: \u2018No, no. You will tell me that I am \u201cfixated.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to tell you\u2019…She insisted so much that I had to tell her, and I said: \u2018See, don\u2019t you tell me \u201cfixated\u201d now?\u00a0 But as I was saying this, a telegram arrived, addressed to me: \u2018Luisa died.\u2019\u00a0 I started to cry even more.\u00a0 The Mother asked me what was the telegram about; I showed it to her and she said: \u2018You were right.\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell us about the relationship between Luisa and the Blessed Mother – with Mary.\u00a0 Did Mary visit Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – We couldn\u2019t see it.\u00a0 Luisa remained with the \u201cfuselli\u201d in her hands, and she moved her lips as if she were speaking. But she didn\u2019t want to tell us.\u00a0 One evening I said: \u2018Luisa, I will spend the night here tonight.\u00a0 Please, tell me something. What did the Blessed Mother say?\u00a0 And she said: \u2018Lord, what should I do with this little girl?\u2019\u00a0 Then, little by little, she told me. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

FJ – In your opinion, is Luisa a saint?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes.<\/p>\n

FJ – For which reason?<\/p>\n

SG – First of all, she never rebelled against anything.\u00a0 Even when they came to take the books away.\u00a0 Father Annibale had brought them.\u00a0 Who knows how much he had spent. There were about 50 copies of the Hours of the Passions and there were also the ones of the Blessed Mother.\u00a0 They came and took them away…\u00a0 Just the other day I was thinking: \u2018Who knows if they still have them…\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell me about Father Annibale.\u00a0 Why did you choose Father Annibale and his Congregation?\u00a0 Or maybe Father Palma chose you.<\/p>\n

SG – No.\u00a0 Nobody spoke to me.\u00a0 I said to the Founder…<\/p>\n

FJ – Father Annibale?<\/p>\n

SG \u2013 Yes, I said: \u2018Father, I want to become a nun.\u2019 And he said: \u2018But you are still too little\u2019\u00a0 I said: \u2018No, Father, I am ten years old!\u2019\u00a0 And he: \u2018Well, there are still four years!\u2019<\/p>\n

FJ – What did Father Annibale think about Luisa? Can you tell me?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes<\/p>\n

FJ – What did he think of Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – The Father?<\/p>\n

FJ – Yes<\/p>\n

SG – He believed that she was a saint….He said that Luisa had converted me.<\/p>\n

He said that one day in Corato he heard that there was a saint.\u00a0 That day he didn\u2019t go upstairs, but after fifteen days he started to go to her… everybody knew that..<\/p>\n

FJ – Did he often visit Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes. Not at the beginning, because he didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 Then, he heard that in Corato there was a chosen soul..from Father Benedetto, I believe.<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell me a Father Benedetto Calvi<\/p>\n

SG – Oh, Don Benedetto….He loved me so much<\/p>\n

FJ – He too was very close to Luisa, wasn\u2019t he?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, he was.\u00a0 Not at the beginning.\u00a0 At the beginning there was Don Clemente.\u00a0 Don Clemente was very strict.\u00a0 Once, I went to Confession to him… and he reproached me…<\/p>\n

FJ – Can you remember when the remains of Luisa were transferred from the Cemetery to Santa Maria Greca?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, I remember.\u00a0 I said to Father: \u2018Don\u2019t put her in the ground, otherwise people will tread on her\u2019 FJ – Is there anything else you can tell us about Father Annibale?\u00a0 Do you remember when he died?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, I remember.\u00a0 There was a mobilization in the entire Messina.\u00a0 They venerated him. He was really a saint. His pockets were always full.<\/p>\n

FJ – Of what?<\/p>\n

SG – Of food….to give it to the poor…<\/p>\n

FJ – After you became a nun, did he talk to you about Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes. He always talked to me about her.<\/p>\n

FJ – Do you know that he called the Convent in Corato \u201cHouse of the Divine Will?\u201d<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, yes, yes.\u00a0 But, see then..what the sisters did…<\/p>\n

FJ –\u00a0 What did they do?<\/p>\n

SG – They sent Luisa away…<\/p>\n

FJ – For what reason…..do you know?<\/p>\n

SG – Who knows….We couldn\u2019t say anything.\u00a0 And then, since I was considered as the \u201cfavorite\u201d of Luisa…I had to be silent… Yes, they called me the like this… But it was true.<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell me about that time when you said that you wanted to see Luisa, but before entering the room your feet remained \u201cglued\u201d [stuck]<\/em> to the floor and you couldn\u2019t walk…Do you remember?<\/p>\n

SG – One day we went – myself and my friend Francesca, the girl who died… – to visit Luisa to see whether she was moving or not.\u00a0 And we said: \u2018Luisa is dead…why isn\u2019t she moving?<\/p>\n

FJ – But you said that your feet remained stuck…<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, the other one…Francesca!…had to help me to walk…<\/p>\n

FJ – You were scared….<\/p>\n

SG – Yes. That was the last time I did it.<\/p>\n

FJ – How did you learn how to work with the \u201ctombolo\u201d?\u00a0 Was it hard?<\/p>\n

SG – No, because Luisa loved me…<\/p>\n

FJ – And then you did it all your life…<\/p>\n

SG – Yes\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

FJ – …And what do you do now in the Convent. Tell me about your life of today.<\/p>\n

SG – I work with the \u201ctombolo\u201d!\u00a0 When there something else to do, I do it.<\/p>\n

FJ – Do you still work with the children?<\/p>\n

SG – Not any more…but I spent 15 years with the orphans!…<\/p>\n

FJ – Did you like that experience?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes! I loved the children, and they loved me too.<\/p>\n

FJ – Did you talk to them about Luisa?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes, sometimes.\u00a0 They also asked me about her…yes, about Luisa<\/p>\n

FJ – And now, are you praying a lot for vocations?<\/p>\n

SG – Yes,.. we are praying for vocations…<\/p>\n

FJ – Tell me about your parents.\u00a0 What were their names?<\/p>\n

SG – My mother\u2019s name was \u2018Grazia\u2019. My father was \u2018Savino\u2019 Capozza<\/p>\n

FJ – ..And your brothers and sisters?<\/p>\n
