{"id":18880,"date":"2017-08-18T19:18:52","date_gmt":"2017-08-19T00:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/luisapiccarreta.co\/?p=18880"},"modified":"2017-08-18T19:18:52","modified_gmt":"2017-08-19T00:18:52","slug":"cardinal-burke-outlines-formal-correction-of-pope-francis-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/luisapiccarreta.co\/?p=18880","title":{"rendered":"Cardinal Burke Outlines Formal Correction of Pope Francis\u2019 Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/luisapiccarreta.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Cardinal-Raymond-Burke_right.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18881\" src=\"http:\/\/luisapiccarreta.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Cardinal-Raymond-Burke_right-300x204.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/luisapiccarreta.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Cardinal-Raymond-Burke_right-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/luisapiccarreta.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Cardinal-Raymond-Burke_right-440x300.png 440w, https:\/\/luisapiccarreta.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Cardinal-Raymond-Burke_right.png 681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><strong>Cardinal Raymond Burke (right) seated next to Cardinal Carlo Caffarra<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>at the Rome Life Forum, May 19, 2017. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/blog\/edward-pentin\/cardinal-burke-outlines-formal-correction-of-pope-francis-teaching#.WZZOUlF96Um\"><em>(Edward Pentin photo)<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-subhead\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The former prefect of the Apostolic Signatura explains in a new interview how a correction of parts of the Holy Father\u2019s magisterium would be enacted, pays tribute to the recently deceased Cardinal Meisner, and stresses the importance of true mercy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-author\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/blog\/edward-pentin\/cardinal-burke-outlines-formal-correction-of-pope-francis-teaching#.WZZOUlF96Um\">Edward Pentin <\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a new interview, Cardinal Raymond Burke has said it is \u201cnow necessary\u201d that a declaration be issued on key areas of Church doctrine that are \u201cnot clear\u201d in Pope Francis\u2019 teachings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Holy Father will then be \u201cobliged to respond\u201d in order to bring clarification to those teachings, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cardinal <a href=\"http:\/\/thewandererpress.com\/catholic\/news\/frontpage\/interview-with-cardinal-burke-discriminating-mercy-defending-christ-and-his-church-with-true-love-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <\/a><em>The Wanderer <\/em>newspaper Aug. 14 that such a formal act of correction has not been invoked \u201cfor several centuries\u201d and until now it has never been used \u201cin a doctrinal way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But he said it would be \u201cquite simple\u201d and involve presenting on the one hand the \u201cclear teaching of the Church\u201d and on the other \u201cwhat is actually being taught by the Roman Pontiff.\u201d The teaching in question in particular relates to doctrinal matters published in the Pope&#8217;s 2016 apostolic exhortation, <em>Amoris laetitia.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf there is a contradiction, the Roman Pontiff is called to conform his own teaching in obedience to Christ and the Magisterium of the Church,\u201d the cardinal explained, adding that a \u201cformal declaration\u201d would be submitted to the Holy Father to which he would be \u201cobliged to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cardinal stressed that the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/blog\/edward-pentin\/full-text-and-explanatory-notes-of-cardinals-questions-on-amoris-laetitia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dubia<\/a>, <\/em>five questions which he and three other cardinals (Cardinals Carlo Caffarra, Walter Brandm\u00fcller and Joachim Meisner)\u00a0issued nearly a year ago, aimed to give the Holy Father the occasion to clarify these aspects of Church teaching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They were issued in a \u201cvery respectful way and not in any way aggressive,\u201d he said, but as the Pope has \u201cchosen not to respond\u201d to them, \u201cso it is now necessary simply to state what the Church teaches about marriage, the family, acts that are intrinsically evil, and so forth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThese are the points that are not clear in the current teachings of the Roman Pontiff; therefore, this situation must be corrected. The correction would then direct itself principally to those doctrinal points,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cardinal, a former prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Church\u2019s highest court, did not give a timeframe for the correction, but hinted at its urgency by stressing that the Church is \u201cbeing torn asunder right now by confusion and division\u201d and that unity is at stake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Holy Father must be called on to exercise his office to put an end to this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cardinal Burke first suggested a possible formal correction of the Pope in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/cardinal-burke-on-amoris-laetitia-dubia-tremendous-division-warrants-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with the Register last November, saying it is \u201cclearly quite rare\u201d but if there was no response, then it would be a \u201cquestion of taking a formal act of correction of a serious error.\u201d He spoke then of \u201ctremendous division\u201d that is \u201cnot the way of the Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his latest interview, he said he finds\u00a0the situation \u201chas only worsened\u201d and pointed to\u00a0groups of lay faithful,\u00a0priests and bishops he has met\u00a0who are\u00a0\u201cpractically in desperation\u201d over what is happening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Any fraternal correction is expected to be undertaken in the first place\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lastampa.it\/2016\/12\/27\/vaticaninsider\/eng\/the-vatican\/any-fraternal-correction-proposed-to-the-pope-must-be-presented-in-camera-caritatis-FJoM3ZlJ2VlfpA4M9CAI1H\/pagina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>in camera caritatis<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0in other words, not in public, according to Cardinal Brandm\u00fcller.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his interview with <em>The Wanderer,<\/em> the cardinal warned of the danger of schism if universal doctrinal discipline is not restored, but reiterated his firm opposition to that ever happening. \u201cA schism can never be correct,\u201d he said, adding that what is happening is a situation of apostasy that the Blessed Mother warned about in her Message of Fatima.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere can be apostasy within the Church and this, in fact, is what is going on,\u201d he said. \u201cIn connection with the apostasy, Our Lady also referred to the failure of pastors to bring the Church to unity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/blog\/edward-pentin\/cardinal-burkes-10-ways-to-overcome-confusion-division-in-the-church\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speech<\/a> last month, Cardinal Burke observed that disorientation and error had entered into the Church \u201cin a diabolical way,\u201d but encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast in the faith as well as courageous and serene, knowing Christ\u2019s victory is \u201calready written.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cardinal Meisner and true mercy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his latest interview, the cardinal also praised Cardinal Joachim Meisner, the archbishop emeritus of Cologne and one of the four cardinals to sign the <em>dubia, <\/em>saying he had a \u201cprofound sense of the Catholic Faith\u201d and always \u201csupported and encouraged\u201d those who defended the Church\u2019s \u201cconstant teaching and practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHe was a wonderful pastor,\u201d Cardinal Burke said, who never criticized those who supported the Church\u2019s teaching as \u201clegalists\u201d who \u201cdo not care about people\u201d and were \u201cthrowing stones\u201d at others. \u201cHe was a very loving pastor who understood that a good shepherd of the flock must teach the truth to the faithful in its entirety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cardinal also confirmed the existence of a commission to examine Bl. Paul VI\u2019s encyclical <em>Humanae vitae <\/em>and warned that if the Church&#8217;s infallible teaching\u00a0on contraception (that it\u00a0\u201cis intrinsically disordered, that to separate the unitive and procreative aspects of the marital act is always and everywhere wrong\u201d)\u00a0is not upheld, it would \u201cbe an opening to all kinds of immoral activity involving our sexual faculties while people would justify sinful genital acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also stressed the importance of \u201cdiscriminating mercy\u201d which \u201cdistinguishes the sin from the sinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAn expression of love toward the sinner makes it very clear that the sin he or she is committing is absolutely repulsive and must be stopped. Yet, the tendency is to respond with a false sense of mercy,\u201d the cardinal said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf we are not conscious of our sin and repenting of it, what does it mean to ask for God\u2019s mercy? Why are we asking for God\u2019s mercy if we have not sinned? So it is as simple as that. Otherwise, mercy is a meaningless term.
